Poems in German Lieder are often naive, sentimental and romantic. Love sick "loons" pining for heartless "quines", sitting around gazing into rivers admiring sunsets, but as the German "cowps ower" so readily into the Doric, working on the translations became for me an indulgent exercise; the opportunity to revisit much loved songs and to translate them into a dialect I love and want to contribute in some small way to its preservation.

Mary Johnston nee Mackie was born in Aberdeenshire. When she began writing five years ago, to her surprise, it was in her first language, The Doric. She considers herself bi-lingual. Her poems have been published in Northwards, Leopard, Lallans, Pushing Out The Boat, Storm, Quantum Leap and The Herald. She was short-listed for the McCash Poetry Prize 2004 and has won Diplomas for Excellence in The Scottish International Poetry Competition 2001/02 and 2003/04.
This is her first collection and contains some childhood memories of the late 30s and 40s.
