POEM ABOUT POETRY (Shearsman Books)
from DAS SONETTARIUM
by ANDREAS REIMANN
(translated by Tessa Ransford and appearing in The Nightingale Question)
We are so altogether purposeless:
a meagre rain that fails to soak the grass.
Poor poet, patched-up, shabby, colourless,
from the land of Make-Believe-Romance.
Poems come to nothing long before
they scramble into words on the paper.
The best, a gust, a stammer, nothing more,
if measured with a suffering that never
reaches speech. We allude to love and death
yet these may not be mentioned: it is thus
we are so altogether purposeless.
The poem, condemned to seem but pomp and fuss,
is almost silence - like the burning bush -
and dying, just a poem come to grief.
